Breast cancer events, benefits, fundraisers, gatherings, and outings. To attend or not to attend...
In October of 2013 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and a flood of pink came rushing through my door. Family, friends and even strangers were kindly sending me thoughtful gifts - most of them included at least something "pink". My drawers are filled with pink socks, pink pajamas, pink hats, pink shirts and someone even gave my mom her first pair of converse sneakers - and they are PINK! She wears them all the time!
I have never been a fan of the color pink. Before last October, I would never have gone and purchased myself a pink shirt. It's been a year and I can say now that the color has somewhat grown on me. I feel the need to wear something in support of breast cancer, every time I leave the house. Even if it's just my pink rubber bracelet or the ribbon necklace that someone gave me.
Now when I see a gathering of people in pink, it immediately grabs my attention and I need to know what's going on. I want to take part. I want to be involved. A year ago, I just wanted the cancer out of me and didn't care to learn of any "pink" events, much less take part in anything related to breast cancer. Now that I have survived all these treatments, I am drawn to take part and get involved. I feel like I belong with other survivors like me. I want to stand on the top of a mountain with 10,000 survivors wearing all pink, and scream at the top of my lungs "MY STORY DOESN'T END WITH CANCER!"
That being said, I am now in search of all breast cancer related annual events in the Upstate New York area, so I can take part. As I find them, I will add them to this list! This way, I won't miss anything in 2015!
