Expect the Unexpected - Basket Delivery Day

I recently held an online gift basket auction to raise funds for my 60 mile/3 day Komen walk.   The auction was held over a 12 day period, as an event on facebook where anyone could bid on a gift basket, at any time from any where.  It actually worked out better than hosting a party and raffling off the baskets because people were able to outbid each other if they really wanted the basket.

I auctioned off a total of 15 gift baskets and 1 free basket to a lucky winner.  The total amount I raised was just over $700 and after expenses, I profited $521!  I was able to get many donated items for my gift baskets, so the fact that I spent only $182 in total was fantastic because there were a ton of great items inside each gift set.

I was thankful that all the winners were local so I didn’t have to add the expense of mailing any, but not looking forward to spending a whole day in the truck making deliveries. I tend to make plans and figure out how to actually make it work AFTER the plan is in place.  Maybe it’s to trick my brain into getting it done or maybe I just work better when I’m under the gun…?  Either way, I had to deliver 14 wrapped baskets to places such as Fulton, North Syracuse, Manlius, Parish, Camillus, Phoenix and Cicero – all before my 2:00 doctor appointment at the Upstate Cancer Center in Syracuse.

So I was up with the sunrise, showered, and at my first drop off location by 8:30am.

I was in unfamiliar territory, nervous about any possible dogs that may come creeping around the corner, and still a little tired – but I put one foot in front of the other and walked that basket to the door (hoping I was at the right house).  A woman walked out, whom I have never met and greeted me with a welcoming cheek to cheek smile!  I gave her the basket and offered a sincere thank you.

I left that house with such a huge sense of gratitude and my dreaded day turned into a spectacular journey filled with many more smiles, blue skies, sunshine, old country back roads with no stop lights, a cat on a leash, lots of ducks in ponds and even pink ribbon waste bins.

All in all, I drove over 125 miles, delivered 13 baskets, AND made it to my 2:00 appointment!

Thank you to all who participated in this event… I got more than I bargained for… in a good way!

I prefer not to be defined by cancer, but my life has certainly changed because of it.
Today, the simplicity of life and small moments of joy is what drives me.
Thanks for following my journey!
