In 2012, I embarked on a Paleo/Crossfit 30 day challenge. Since then, I have been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer and am now beginning the Focus T25 program. I had very successful results with my 2012 challenge but there's no way my body today could handle the intensity of a crossfit workout so I have chosen the Focus T25 modified plan and after I complete this program, I will compare both challenges.

Ok, so it's day 1 of my healthy living challenge. Let me first explain the goals behind this extreme lifestyle change.
Goal 1: Lose weight! For my first 35 years, I ate anything I wanted (mainly Doritos, Pepsi, Pizza, any kind of Pasta and as much bread as I could get my hands on). Now at age 38, I find my metabolism has taken a wrong turn! I have tried every diet pill, diet shake, quick diet fix, 3 day and 7 day diets... nothing works! I have a membership to a gym but never find the time to go. AND, it's summer... you would think I live on Wisteria Lane with Gabrielle and friends! At the neighborhood party last weekend, in 92 degree weather, I refused to put a baithing suit on, nor did I dip in the pool!
Goal 2: To live a healthy life! Not only do I want to be a positive example for my children, but it wouldn't hurt to lessen the amount of headache's and cold's I seem to get every year.
What is this Paleo Program for healthy eating and the Crossfit Training program?
Crossfit:
An excerpt from the Crossfit website: CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.
Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.
The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.
Here is my short version of the definition of Crossfit: A toning program that offers a 20-minute extremely intense workout. But keep in mind that I've only been in the program for 3 weeks.
The Paleolithic Diet:
Although many refer to paleo as a lifestyle way of eating, rather than a diet... In this challenge, I have about 25 lbs to lose so we're going to use the word "diet."
Often heard of as "the world’s healthiest diet," or the "Paleo diet" or "caveman diet" is based on the simple understanding that the best human diet is the one to which we are best genetically adapted. The food template is actually pretty simple... if you can kill it, you can eat it and if it comes in a bag or a box, you can't eat it. The 30-day challenge is a bit more strict to get your body detoxed and transitioned.
A breakdown of the do's and don'ts: Do eat: fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, roots, and nuts. Do NOT eat: Grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.
DAY 1
Today is a Tuesday, which is an 'off' crossfit day... and for that, I am thankful! The stress of beginning this new diet and leaving my old routine behind has burned most of my daily energy. My morning asiago bagel with cream cheese will no longer exist, my afternoon snack of Auntie Anne's pretzel with cheese is gone... boy, I had NO idea how many carbs I actually ate in a day until I began this challenge.
Today, I made my way to the grocery store but am still clueless about what to buy, what I am allowed to have, what ingredients I need for all the recipes, etc. I spent about 45 minutes, wandering cluelessly... eventually picked up a few things that I remember from the books, printed online recipes and discussion with Dr. Ryan Stoffle, Chiropractor and Owner of Evolution of Wellness, who is overseeing my 30-day challenge on the paleo diet.
Food for the day:
Breakfast: scrambled eggs
Lunch: salad - romaine lettuce, iceberg lettuce, walnuts, cut green apples, 1 slice cooked bacon crumbled, grapes and onions with a simple vinagrette dressing.
Dinner: no time or energy to cook, missing many of the ingredients in most of the recipes anyway, so I ate two hard boiled eggs and went to bed.
The lunch salad wasn't the best but it was my first attempt at a salad without my favorite ingredients... CHEESE, CROUTONS and RANCH DRESSING!
No doubt that the first week will be tough and there will be moments of depression but as long as I keep a positive outlook, remember the goals in mind, and eat enough protein to keep me going until I get a system together... I will be ok!
