When I opened my social networks this morning, I saw a couple posts that instantly pissed me off. Believe me, I am all about the first amendment and being able to voice your opinion on any topic – lord knows I do it all the time. But, I think it should be done respectfully.
Once you become a member of the ‘pink ribbon’ club, it’s easy to recognize how much money is wrapped up in everything and anything that sports this logo. Many of us are aware that there would be such a detrimental economic downfall of epic proportions if we were to ever find a cure. When people try to collect donations to 'find a cure', survivors such as myself just shake our heads and smirk. But that’s a whole other topic. The point here is that some survivors are posting negativity towards Breast Cancer Awareness month because of all the corporate capitalizing that goes on. Well for me, I see it for what it is – AWARENESS. If companies want to make money on it and people want to spend money on it – well than I guess that’s good for the economy.
If it weren’t for the constant AWARENESS postings last October, I may not have gone in for my free mammogram. I may not have learned that I have breast cancer. I may not have had my tumor removed. I may not have had any remaining cancer cells removed from my body. And I may not have lived to see BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH come around this year.
This month, I will spread awareness and a shitload of gratitude for more reasons than I can count!
